,'from Our Ecccial Oorrcarondent.) FIRE IN A DWELLING. A fire broke out ill a five-roomed house, in Camp Road, Lower Hutt, yesterday morning at 10.30. The dwelling, which belonged to a syndicate, of which Mr. J. Jack is agent, was insured in the Northern Ofiice for £300, hut the furniture, owned by Mr. Lynstrom, was uninsured. The damage is estimated at about £50, and it is stated that the outbreak originated througl) the misfitting of a primus stove. BOY MISSING. A boy named "Teddy" Evans, aged about 9 years, whoso parents reside at Norraandale, near Lower Hutt, was reported last evening to the Hutt police to be missing. Ho was sent on an errand to the Hutt, and was last seen making for his home at about 4.45 p.m., but did not return. The lad is of sturdy | build, ruddy complexion, and very fair. A search was made late last evening. HUTT RELIEF FUND. A meeting of the Hutt Relief Fund was held last evening, there being present Messrs. Baldwin (chairman), Bums, Allen, Reeves, and West. The total amount realised through the sale of potatoes was £285, and it is anticipated that after deducting the expenditure incurred there will be a profit of £205. In respect to a widow in the district, it was decided to pay the rent of her house from the time that her husband left Lower Hutt for the front, and as she had recently gouo to reside with relatives it was resolved that the sum of 15s. per week be allowed her until advice be received from the Imperial Government regarding her pension. RAILWAF PRESENTATION. At Petone railway station on Friday evening last 'a very pleasant event took place, when Mr. P. J. M'llvride, wlm has recently been appointed inspector of electric lines, was the recipient of a gold-mounted fountain pen. The railwaymen who are directly connected with the electric signalling sysr torn at Lower Hutt, Petone, Ngnhaurar nga, find Kaiwarni combined to show their appreciation in some permanent form. Mr. Ohas. Broad, clerk at Petone, made the presentation. In congratulating Mr. M'llvride on his pronation Mr. Broad spoke of his sterling qualities and kindly advice in the past, and hoped that tie cordial relations formed would long continue. Messrs. Perfect, Coatman, Foley, and Ffrost spolce in eulogistic terms, the keynote being "he's a jolly good fellow." Mr. M'llvride feelingly responded, and I hanked the combined staffs for tbejr pood wishes. Hearty applause terminated the proceedings. An at home in connection with tho Women's Christian Temperance Union was hsld at Mrs. G. D. M'Ewan's, Britannia. Street, Petone, yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of ia<jies, Mrs. Rouse being in the chair. Duririp: the aftornoon a very interesting antl instructive addregs on the work in the Old Country was given by Miss Bigson, who is visiting New Zealand. An address was also given by Mrs. Neal. Songs were given by Miss -Nora M'Ewan, Miss Marjory M'Ewan, Miss jtqqse: a violin solo was given by Miss Mansill; arid a recitation by Mrs. Usniar. There wore several visitors from Wellington. The Hutt Valley Homing Pigeon Club flew' their last race of the season from Napier last week. Results: —L. Booth's Texas; time, shr. 28min. ltlsec.; velocity, 879.18 yards per minute, C. £>. «nd 0. Abraham's Gift; time, oln. 32min. 26sec.'; velocity, 873.72 yards per piimite, second. Booth Bros.' Night Hawk; time, 6hr. 32min. 49sec.; velocity, 867.26 yarJs per minute, third. The aggregate points scored during the season are as follow: —Whitehead and Booth, 33 points, first; L. Booth, 26 points, second; C. Gougli, 18 points, third. At the weekly session of the Hope of Petone Lodge of 1.0. G.T., Bro. Kinsley ivas elected an L.D. Tim item for the night, a court case on trading with the enepiy, was abandoned through the absence of members. Next week the election of officers take place, and a good attendance of members is requested. Tbo lodge was closed by Bro. Rose. C.T. , . The Petone Municipal Band is tendering Mr. Swayslaud, late secretary of the band, a smoke concert next Tuesday, on the occasion of his departure from Petone. ■
