UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE

COUNTY COUNCILLORS SUED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

Wanganul, April 20. A number of ex-members of the Wanganui County Council were sued in the Magistrate's Court to-day for a refund of £9 55., being the amount disputed by the' Audit Department as in excess of unauthorised expenditure permitted by law. Tho items woro for the chairman's travelling expenses to the Counties' Conference, and expanses of a delegate to a conference re Native rates. Counsel for defendants contended that the items were legitimate expenditure. Counsel for the Department contended that no county money could be spent for promoting legislation. The Magistrate (llr. Kerr) reserved his judgment.
