The Hon. J, Allen, who had intended to return to Wellington- this morning, has altered his plans slightly." He will be at Levin to-day, returning to Wellington this evening. v The Hon. W. H. Herries has gone south to make a tour of the. South Island Railways, which will include a visit to the West Coast. He will be absent from Wellington for about ten days. The Japanese commercial envoys are 'due to return from the south this ; morning. It is understood, that Dr.- M'Gavin, ■of Wellington, will leave New Zealand shortly as chief medical officer, of the stationary hospital, which is being '.established at the front by the New (Zealand Government. : It was mentioned at last evening's meeting of the Roseneath Ratepayers' Association that Messrs. S. S.. Williams and J. J. M'Grath had been approached officially and asked to stand for the City Council, but that neither had been able to accede to the request. A-private letter received in Wellington yesterday morning states that Lieutenant Douglas Beere, who left Now Zealand for Egypt as dental surgeon with the Auckland Mounted Rifles, ha 3 been promoted to the rank of captain. He is a son of Mrs. Holroyd Beere, of Wellington.
Mr, H. Wood, well known in local musical ciroles, has been appointed, as-sistant-secretary to the Wellington Orphans Club. The sixth session of this club will commence in May. Dr. Gilbert Dive, F.R.C.P., formerly of Hawera, now in the Army Medical Service, is now serving with the Army in France. Captain F. G. • Kimbell, manager of the Hawera braijch of the Bank of Australasia, has been notified that his services have been accepted for the Expeditionary Forces, states the "Taranaki Daily News." Mr. H.'P. Opie, late engineer to the 'Egmont County Council, has joined the Reinforcements now in camp at Trentham. Mr. J. B. Aitkcn, of Palmerston North, • will leave Wellington to-mor-ro\y to connect at Sydney with the Orient liner Omrah next week. Dr. and Mrs.' Cowie, of Masterton, are to leave for England, via San Francisco, by the Maitai on April 29. Mr, _ and Mrs. O. H. Cruickshank, two visitors from -America, are touring New Zealand. Mr. William Smith, of Gisborne, cousin of Dr. Hardwick Smith, is to leave to-morrow for Sydney en route to London. Mr. D. E. Hutchins, who visited New Zealand with the British Association's party some months ago, writes from Hobart to say that he intends to visit New Zealand again very shortly.
An old and highly-esteemed member of the Wellington Bowling Club in the person of Mr. W. M: Muir invited some of his old friends to partake of afternoon tea at the club's pavilion yesterday afternoon in celebration of his seventy' second birthday. The tables were graced by bunches of excellent grapes grown by Mr. Muir in bis Majoribaiifs Street hothouse, as an adjunct to the improvised little feast. The president of the club (Mr. Edwin Moult) seized the opportunity of congratulating Mr. Muir on his birthday, and wished him long lifo and prosperity, a cordial wish that was heartily reciprocated by all present. Before leaving Wellington, Lieutenant Miles, son of Mr. A. 11. Miles, managing partner of Murray, Roberts and Co., was presented by his confreres on the staff of that firm with a handsome silver spirit flask. The presentation was accompanied with all good wishes for his safety and advancement whilst serving with the colours. Mr. Leslie Miles, wool buyer for Murray, Roberts and Co., has also joined the forces now in camp at Trentham.
