The funeral of the late -Mr.' Fred ' Hedges, who succumbed to'injuries re" ceived as a result of an explosion whil< ho was exporiraenting, took placo or Sunday, and was largely attended. • Tht deceased, who was of a genial anc. amiable disposition, was a member ol the Pahiatua Fire Brigade, Foresters' Lodge, and the Wellington ' Mountoc Signalling Corps. Tho body was coiy" veyed to the cemetery on the Firo Brigade reel, members of the Foresters' Lodge and. the Signalling Corps leading the procession. At the graveside the ritual of the lodge and the Fire Brigade was read, and the "Last Post"was sounded, and a volley fired by tho Signalling Corps. The deceased "field the position of branchman in tho Fire Brigade. The latter institution has been in force for about a quarter of "a century, and Sunday was the first time that the brigade had to assemble for the burial of' an active member. Members of the Woodville and Eketahuna Fire Brigades also took part in the aervice. , The Pahiatua-Pongaroa mail servicS was taken over yesterday (Monday) by a Makuri resident. The new proprietor has a thorough knowledge of the road, having conducted a carrying business between the two centres, for sev« oral years, past.
