A-RECORD SALE • Great interest was manifested in the dispersal sale last week of tho famous .iTe Aute herd of Shorthorns. The To 'iAirte herd, which was founded over 50 tyea:rs ago by Archdeacon Samuol \Vililiams, has always held a foremost position among the Shorthorn herds in New /Zealand, and probably 'has a reputation that would be hard to eclipse in . It was only to be expected that the sale would attract buyers from all parts cf the Dominion, as there are few herds that have gained such distinction as the Te Aute herds. lYear after year, remarks the Hastings '•"Tribune," in reviewing the sale, tho "strain was improved upon and the best importations from Great Britain fend elsewhere, added from time to , time, have welded the links together, W that now the Te Aute herds are looked upon with envy and admiration, ffhe sale was conducted by Messrs. Williams and Kettle, in conjunction with Messrs. Abraham arid Williams. On (Wednesday the lots offered wore principally confined to breeding cows and pull calves, and the bidding throughout Vas very keen. The cattle looked in 'the pink of condition, notwithstanding the dry season that has been experienced, for which the management aro to be congratulated. The arrangements for the exhibition of this various lines iwas perfect, buyers having no difficulty jin selecting their,particular choice. The [highest price paid during the day was guineas for the bull calf Te Auto •Knight 95th, purchased by Mr. J. ■M'Master, of Featherston, and the top price for a coiv was 150 guineas, Tea (Rose 21st, ijurcliased by Mr. Arch M'Lean for his Greenhill herd, the same fouyer also procuring for 135 guineas Buttercup 13th and Minnie sth for 125 guineas. Mr. J. Overton, of Maraekakaho, purchased Lady Connaught, 3rd for 105 guineas, and. Lady Steven IV for 105 guineas. Mr. J. Lyon purchased Royal Duchess 35th for 60 guineas fotr his Greeii'hill herd. SECOND AND THIRD DAYS. . STILL BETTER PRICES. ■The sale was continued on. Thursday land Friday, wid there was again, on each day a very large attendance, with spirited competition for the various lots. ■ were even better on the whole ■than on tho first day, and the sale .■proved to bo a record Shorthorn sale for the Dominion, the total amount realised being over £15,000; The stock kere eagerly sought after, and many of )th© animals sold "will find their "way to JA-iistralia, quite a jrumber having been purchased for shipment to Queensland, f.wfcere already Te Auto stock have made a name for themselves, having, among other awards, won championship honours at the Toowoomba Show. On Thursday no fewer than four cows topped the 'highest price obtained for cows on tho ■previous day. _ These were Te Aute ■ffioss 64th, which goes to Mr. Arch. 'M'Lean's Greenhill herd for 270 guineas, •"the highest price of the sale for a cow. :{Tc Aute Buttercup 70th and Lady Consnaught 10th, both of which fell to Sir AY. Buchanan's bids of 265 guineas and 2-10 guineas respectively, and.Te Aute l ; J3uttercup 65th, which was secured by [Mr. Arch. M'Lean for 160 guineas. In •addition, the "Hawke's Bay Herald" ■TomaTks, Sir W. Buchanan gave 100 guineas for Te Auto Buttercup 66th, and at the same price the Moore Hunter Estate, Hawera, secured Te Auto Nun 26th. Sir W. Buchanan and Mr. b\.rch. M'Lean were dipping very deeply into the Te Ante blood, and anything Sex bra good was sure to find them Ihmongst the bidders. The bulls were ijust as keenly competed for as wore the cows, and splendid prices were made. The two top-nriced animals ■ were Te •Ante Knight 25th, 310 guineas, and To ■'Aute Knight 33rd, 210 guineas, both of ywhich were purchased by Messrs. H. B. jand A\ B. A- Turner, of Eltham, . whose 'Shorthorn herd is one of tho best in the [Dominion, gave 150 guineas for Royal uDoke 62nd, Mr. C. Gray, of Waiohika, Gisborne, went to 160 guineas for Boilinda Duke of Derrimut 375 th, Mr. R. ■ K. Murphy, of Gisborne, got Te Auto Knight 76th for 195 guineas, while Mr. !A. J. Cameron, of Toanga, Gisborne, secured Te Aute Knight 70th for 103 : guineas. _ Mr. A. Douglas Williams, of Otane, Bought Royaj Duke 19th, whoso •record is six first prizes and four championships, for 100 guineas, and though • getting on in Tears he must bo considered a very cheap bull. Mr. A. D. M'Master, of Featherston, also paid 100 guineas for Royal Duke 58th. The average price obtained for the cows was '40.7 guineas, and for the young bulls, 18 months and under, 53.6 guineas, while tho avorago prices obtained for tho progeny of tie imported bull Bapton Mascot wore: Females, 74 guineas; bulls, 77 guineas.
