SHOT WHILE TRACKING SNIPERS, (Rec. April 10, 11.45 p.m.) London, April 19. The late Mr. W. H. Gladstone, M.P., whose death at the front was reported last week, was shot in the forehead while trying to locate a German sniper. "VEGETABLES"' FOR GERMANY, (Rec. April 19, 11.45 p.m.) Ceneva, April 19. The Customs officers seized a-wagon labelled "vegetables," consigned from Genoa to Germany, and which, on examination, was found to be full of American maxims. KITCHENER'S "BANTAMS." London, April 18. Lord Rosebery, speaking at Edin* burgh in connection with the recruitins of a bautam battalion, quoted Lord Kitchener's message: "If anybody, says I'm opposed to the bantams, he's . a liar." Lord Rosebery said he hoped the bantams would prove as good as Goliaths in the field.—("Times" and Sydney "Sun". Services.) RELICS FROM THE EJIDEN. Sydney, April 19. _ A steamer has brought a large quantity of relics of the German cruiser Emden, including two guns. ! —: BLUE-BLOODED DEMOCRAT ENLISTS. . Sydney, April 19. Among the enlisters for the war is a' : man claiming an earldom. He states that his father came to Australia and settled, and inherited, but never claimed the title in public. He died in 1910, but the son did not claim the earldom, declaring: "What's a title to a democratic citizen of Australia?" The family seat dates back to the thirteenth century.
