The Very Rev. Dean Tubman ttib met by his Timaru and St. Andrew's parishioners on Tuesday night, and presented with a substantial purse of sovereigns as a token of esteem, prior to his departure on furlough to America' to visit his brother. 'Die Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes left for Christchuroh last night to attend the carnival being held in that city in aid of the Belgian Relief. Fund. Residents of Kaiwarra turned out in force to bid farewell to three brothers —William, Ernest, and Leonard Handle —all of whom have joined the Expeditionary Forces. Two of the brothers have already served at Samoa, and the other has joined since. Mr. A. W. Newton presided, and spoke well of the three men, who are going to do service for the Empire. Each was presented with a purse of sovereigns provided by the residents. Mr. T. W. Kirk, of the Agricultural Department, leaves for the, south tonight. Mr. James Macintosh has been appointed a, member of the Public Trust Office Board, vice Mr- G.. E. Tolhurst, who has resigned to go for a trip to England. Mr. Martin F. Luckie has decided to again stand as a candidate for the City Council. He.will address a mooting of electors next week. : The "Mount Bender Mail" reports the death of Mr. John Watson, at- hia residence, Table A'iew Farm, Roxburgh; The deceased was born at Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1840, and in 1861 came out to New Zealand in the ship l'ladda. ' At the Wellington Suburbs • Defenoe Rifle Club's "social," the president of the club (Mr, C. R. Graham) took the opportunity of presenting Mr. W. G: J-ellingham, who has been secretary since the club's inception, with a purse of sovereigns, and in doing so eulogised the good work done by him year pfter year! which work had in no small degree helped to bring the club into the prominent position it now, holds' amongst rifle cluns in the Dominion.
