Colonel A. W. Robin, Commandant of the Forces, returned from an official visit to the south'yesterday, after visiting the Territorial camps at Wmgatui (iJuiiedin) and Oamaru. -He wi'l pay a visit'of inspection to the camp at Ivarorl early noxt week, and a little later may visit Gisborne with the same object in view. Tho Hon. J. Duthie, M.L.C.. left .yesterday on a holiday visit to Australia. Mr. W. 31. Hannay has accepted a scat on the local/Board of Directors of Die Commercial Union Assurance -Company, Limited. Messrs. J. B. Harcourt, John Eirkcaldie, and G. M. Kebbel are' the. other members of the board. Mr. J. B. Harcourt being chairman. '' •_ _ Mr. P. i Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, is 'visiting Palmerston North, to hear local disputes. , Last evening the Suburbs Rifle Clilb farewelled one of their members, Rifleman C. J.Fisher, who returned from Samoa recently, and has ;since joined the Fourth Reinforcements. The president of the club, Mr. C. R. Graham, presided, and during the evening Rifleman Fisher was presented with a pipe. Mr. James Kerr has-been appointed Registrar,'of Births, Deaths,, and Marriages for the Eketanuna District. ' Mr. R. B. Jackson has been appointed a member of the Nelson Harbour Board, vice Mr. John Graham. Mr. Malcolm Ross (the official war correspondent to the New Zealand Forces), left Sydney by the Morea yesterday, ■ enroute; for" the 1 front.—Press (Association. Dr. Stopforrl, who is well known in Auckland, .ha? bwm asked ..to stand for election in the Dalley electorate, New South 'Wales, . Mr. Robert Howe, the sitting member, baring recently died. The death occurred at Timaru of Captain H. T. Heckler, D.5.0., formerly of AVaikouaiti, latterly of Fairlie, a member of :the Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth South African Contingents, who did excellent. service in the Boer war,: and gained the D.S.O. decoration. Tho cause of death was blood-poisoning. The Rev, A* T. Thompson, who is leaving Masterton for Christchurch to-day, was presented by the congregation of Knox Church with a handsome gold watch and chain. The death occurred at Featherston on Tuesday .of Mr. George Henry. Houghton, an old resident of the district, at the age of 67 years. He came to New Zealand from West Kent (England) in 1874. . Mr. Charles Westmacott has arrived in town to make arrangements for a return'of "The Glad Eye" Comedy Company, which on this occasion is to introduce . the merry farcical comedy "AMio's the Lady?".. The season'will commence at the Grand Opera House on Wednesday, April 28.
