DEERSTALKING

Mr. C. H. Bold, ranger for the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, referring. to the deer-stalking prospects in the Wellington, district, said the heads generally were more than up to the standard. Those secured this season are better on the average than any of recent years. So far as the Wairarapa is concerned, there would appear to he a shortage on the surface, but the deer were there. Shortage of feed had driven them back further and further 'nto < the bush, but now they would be coming out. It was quite safe to go to the Wairarapa and rely upon getting good sport. The season there is, however, three weeks later than in the Paranjas, where the fead has been good. He gave some instances of heads recently taken in this district. At Wainui-o-mata, two 12 points, two ll's, and four 10's were taken; at Taihape, a magnificent 12 and a very heavy horned 10. At Paraparaumu, the heads were t better than ever, and two good 12-pointers had been reported as secured by an old stalker. Mr. Bold knows definitely of three 10's and one 11 being secured, and at Eketahuna an 11. two 12's, and one 13 were taken. When he was in. the Eketahuna district himself, and. he had been out since March 12. he saw a better head than any of these. At Palmerston North good heads were reported to have been seen, but the stags were exceptionally wild. He had heard, however, of a good 12-pointer being shot there. He nad yet to hear .from Pongaroa and Tauherinikau, and expected some of the biggest heads would come from there.
