HUTT COUNTY AFFAIRS
ROADS & BRIDGES
HEAVY EXPENDITURE REQUIRED
Ihe monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yetfterday. lliero were present Councillors \V. J. Howell (in the chair), J. Wakehain, W. Galloway, J. Whiteman, aaid Jl. W. Welch.
In bis report, the Inspector of Works (Mr. J; W. Cudby) said that he had gone into the question of tlib probable expenditure required on most of the roads in the counity. Ho found it very difficult to form an accurate estimate of the coat of metalling the many puvts of the various roads which would require to bo treated between now and the end of ithe financial year. 1916. The most expensive items which he felt would have to be attended to during- the year were, first, the Wainui-o-mata Bridge, by the school, which was in a very bad State of repair. The total length, about 86 feet, would cost from JIBOO to ,£IOOO to renew in ferro concrete. The Wainui-o-mata Hill Read would have to be metalled for a distance of at least 40 chains, costing '■250. In addition, Jjso alt least should be allowed for the Lower Valley ltoad. Day's Bay-Lowry Bay Road would cost, for about 320 yards, .£BO. In Epuni Riding a considerable amount of metal would be required to keep the main road in only fair order. The estimate of metal required for East Road in Epuni was, roughly, 960 yards, costing JEI92. In addition to this, a liberal allowance should be made for improving and widening the erabankmenits througn the Taita. The southern end of East Road from Epuni would cost about .£6O in addition to which there was 20 miles of main Toad m the Mungaroa Riding to be maintained. The small bridge at Horse-shoe Bend should be renewed lii concrete for about .£55. Provision should also be made for ronewing two old brick bridges on the Akaitarawa Road, at a cost of about .£7O in each case. From 500 to 600 yards was required in the Horoltiwi Riding. Finally, in Whnreroa Riding, 1840 yards of metal was required for various roads, and .£lB5 for electing a small ferro-concrete bridge across Mungakotukutuku Stream. The report added that the Paekakariki Hill widening works were now near completion, and the Whiteman's Valley metal carting contract had been completed. The report was adopted, with the exception of certain portions concerning more important proposed works. Consideration of these matters was deferred. Councillor Galloway moved: "That the resolution declaring main roads, confirmed by way of special order at a meeting of the Hutt County Council, held on September 22, 1914, be revoked as from and after April 1, 1915." The.motion evoked a lengthy discussion, and eventually it was carried, with one dissentient—tho cli airman. After considerable discussion relative to the Paekakariki Hill grant of iIOO, £ for £, it was decided to spend half the grant on the Horokiwi Valley side and half on the Paekakariki north 6ide of the hill. Accounts amounting to ,£7BO Gs. 2d. were passed for payment.
