THE HAINING STREET RAID
ACCUSED MEN IN COURT
Those arrested in Monday night's raid on alleged gaming houses in Haining Street appeared before Mr. G. Cruickshank, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Four Chinese. Cum Hoy, Ah Wong, Joe Tong, and Wong Lee were each charged with being the registered occupiers of houses Nos. 12, 8, 4, and 10, Haining Street, and using such as common gaming houses. Mr. E. G. Jellicoe appeared for each of the accused, and asked for an adjournment to April 50. The remand was granted, bail being allowed in each caso in £50.
The Europeans formed a motley collection, and each pleaded guilty to being found in common gaming houses belonging to the accused Chinese. The names of the Europeans were as follow: Henry M'Laughlin, Wm. Humphries, Patrick Campbell, Charles Whelan, William Rough, and Henry Watson (found in No. 12), George Crossley (found in No. 8), Edward Lopez; and Robert Hand (found in No. 4). The Magistrate fined each £3 with costs 75., in default Beven days' imprisonment. OTHER CASES. Harold Douglas Barton was charged with damaging a glass showcase' and crockery, to the value of £1, the property of Sing On Kee. He was fined £1 and ordered to pay the cost of'the damage done, with witnesses' expenses, 45., in default seven days' imprisonment. For drunkenness, James M'Laughlin was convicted and ordered to pay medical expenses, £1 Is., while a pronibition order was; issued against him. John O'Neill, similarly charged, was fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Two first offenders were dealt with. CIVIL BUSINESS. A dispute between an anctioneer and his client was heard before Mr. -W. G. Riddell, S.M., James Hulbert, bootmaker, of Willis Street, sueing Magnus Badger, of Lower Cuba Street, for £1 10s. 6d., for goods handed over to defendant for sale._ After hearing ■ the evidence the Magistrate gave judgment for Bs., with costs 65., and ordered the unsold goods to be returned to plaintiff.

Eure £13 13s. sd. by instalments of £1 a month. ■ CLAIM FOR POSSESSION. In the case, Publio Trustee v. Charles Bailey, claim for possession and rent, £11 55., judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed with possession, and oosts £2 9s.
