RAILWAYMEN'S BELGIAN EFFORT

PROFIT OF. OVER £600. A meeting of the Committee of Management of the Wellington Railwaymen's "Belgian Night" was held on Monday. Mr. E. H. Hiley presided. The treasurer explained that while there was still some money to come in for the sale of souvenir programmes which bad been distributed throughout the Service, the balance-sheet made up to date disclosed a not profit of £630 Os. 6d. This, together with the £ for £ subsidy to be granted by tbe Government, would make a substantial donation of £1260' towards the Belgian Relief Fund. The chairman expressed his gratification at the success of the undertaking, a lid congratulated the committee on the energy and enthusiasm displayed. In moving a specialvote of thanks to the Ladies' Committee Mr. Hiley enlarged on the splendid work done by the ladies individually and collectively, and on the whole-hearted way in whioh they had taken tbe matter up. To their efforts the success of the gathering in a very great measure was due. A cordial vote of thanks was also .passed by acclamation to the Minister of Railways (the Hon.' W. H. Herries), who had taken the keenest interest m the railwaymen'B effort, and had -eaded the list of contributions with a iiand6o'me donation, viz., £100. The thaJik's of the committee were also voted to the performers, notably to Mr. W. M'Laugnlin, who had provided a fine orohfejitra of 25 performers; to the City Council, for the free use of the Town Hall; to the Press, for the splendid assistance given in the daily papers; and to all those who had hi any way contributed to the success of the evening. In acknowledging the thanks of the committee for the hearty interest he had taken in the project, Mr. Hiley said that it had given him the greatest pleasure to be associated with the railwaymen in such a good work. The success of this, their first effort, proved what _ they could do when thoroughly united and enthusiastic, ana he looked forward with pleasure to future combined efforts should their ser. vices be required. It is worthy of note that included in the amount contributed, as above is a sum of £42 from the staffs of the railway head offices, who this year gave up their annual picnio and devoted the amount subscribed to the Belgian Relief Fund.
