MILK STATION
CONFERENCE ABOUT CLEARINGHOUSE. Yesterday afternoon Mr. J. Godber, chairman of the Public Health Committee of the City Council, and Mr. W, H. Morton (City Engineer) had a conference with Mr; E. H. Hiley (General Manager of the New Zealand Railways) with regard to the proposal to erect a clearing _ station for treatment of the city's milk, in connection with the proposed central railway station, to be built m Bunny Street. • The proposition of the Council WEs to secure a perpetual lease of ..a section of land from the Government in 'Waterloo Quay adjacent to the site of the proposed new station, and with that end in view complete plans have been prepared by the _ City Engineer's Department, providing for a siding running into the clearing-house. These •plans were submitted' to Mr. Hiley yesterday, and a general discussion on the proposal ensued. It appears that there is some difficulty in the way of the council securing a sufficiently long tenure of the land in question from the Government. Mr. Hiley intimated that there would probably be no objection to the granting of a 21 yearß' lease, but he could not give a guarantee that an option to renew for a further period would be granted, as the land may be required for railway purposes in the future, as the city grows. _ It now remains for the council to consider its position in the light of the attitude taken up by Mr. Hiley in respect to what is considered to be the best available site for the clearing station.
