NOTES AND COMMENTS

rßiGtiHCOi.l Immediately the weights for the first day of the Manawatn Meeting appeared, R, J. Mason scratched Bimeter and Emperador. Acceptances, for the Manawatu Racing Club's first day, and final payments for the 7th Sires' Produce Stakes and Uth Manawatu Stakes close on Tuesday, April 13, at 10 p.m. . The New Zealand rider L. Hagerty rode Mr. L. Robertson's Yiraille home a. winner in the Bush Steeplechase, run at Aspendale on March 27. Tho Auckland horseman, J. ,o'Shea, who has been standing down since November las.t, has been relicensed by the district committee of the Auckland Racing Club. O'Shea will ride Mr. T H. Lowry's horses at the forthcoming Trentham meeting.

By an ' inadvertence Goldstream, 7st. 131b.," was omitted from the published list of acceptors for the Thompson Handicap. The son of Gold Crest is a certain starter in.the big mile, and will be ridden by M. M'Donald. • Chudio has been paid up for .in both th« Thompson and Railway Handicaps on Wednesday,' but the genera] impression is that Mr. J. R. Hart's chestnut will start in the short race.

■ The horses owned by the late t Henry Hodge are to be offered for sale by auction' at Wellington oti Thursday next, the day after tho Thompson Handicap. The team i» nominated for the second day's handicaps at Trentham, and buyers will have a dhance of winning a 6ta'ke early. The horses to be sold are the well-known performers Chillies, Borsil, Margarita, Elevate, Negativej Maun, and Chattia. They are all in racing condition.

The latest horse to come into favonr for (lhe Thompson Handicap is Allon Docne. On Saturday- evening a wellknown speculator coupled the Hastingstrained animal with Chudic. F. E. Jones has been engaged to ride Chortle in the Thompson Handicap on Wednesday. ■' • -

. When tho Messrs. Thompson, of New South Wales, gave 3200 guineas for Charlemagne II at the dispersal sale of Mr. J. S. Reid'6 stud, it was generally thought that tho' imported horse had been well sold, but this has proved to be a mistake. His yearlings are every year bringing big prices, and last week there were several 700-guinea lots sold which claimed Charlemagne II as their sire. Evidently owners on tho other side are trying to find another Carlita.

Merry Roe arrived from Auckland on Saturday. Present intentions are to start the mare in the Trentham and Awapuni Gold Cupß.

The Varco—Adria colt, which brought 575 guineas at the Randwick sales >on Friday is a full-brother to Mr: T. H: Lowry's Marco Bello, a winner at Trentham in January.

Caher Davon changed hands last week, and will in future bo trained by J. R. Franks at Riccarton. The chestnut gelding, should be useful on the West Coast end at tho smaller iheetings in. Canterbury.

The acceptances received -for th» different handicaps at Trentham this week are highly satisfactory. The big race has a payment from twenty-one owners, and the three lop weights havo stood their ground. At the present time Chortle, 95t..41b., and Ladoga, 9st. 21b., are the ruling fancies, and both promise to be dangerous at the finish. With the present state of the weather there is every prospect' of good going, and the top .weights will thus; be greatly advantaged. It will occasion no .surprise if a fresh time record is established.

Mr. J. Grigg was in treaty, last week for the purchase of Maitegarde. from Mr. G. D. Greenwood. The negotiations fell through, however, and the three-year-old daughter of .•Charlemagne; 11-rAnnabello; will remain in R. J. Mason's stable!
