CHRISTCHURCH NOTES, (By Telegraph.—Bnecial Oorressondent.) Christchurch, April 8. The "Looker-on," in the "Evening News," writes :—There was a rumour about town yesterday that Warstep had been sold to go to India. I was informed to-day that the maTe had not, been sold, though there was some foundation for the story, as someone cabled from Australia about a month ago asking her price, A price of five thousand guineas was put on her, but the business ended at that. Emperador looks none the worse for the two races ho had this week. I doubt very much if he.will be raced at Trentham. Nightwatch burst a foot last Saturday, but is not going lame. A short spell should benefit him greatly as he had to be hurried to get him ready for tho Easter Handicap. Warstep was on the course this morning, and did trotting exercise in the middle. Sho was as playful as a. kitten after working. 1
Battle JJlve was not quite ready for thv Easter Meeting, and lost a bit of lumber with, the two races ho had, but it will take another race or two to get him really well.
Sartorze vras on the track again this morning. He is going a, bit short, but it 19 nothing serious. Loneley will take this horse and Banian to Trentham, probably on Saturday evening. Chudic was given a sprint on tbo bit to-day, and will be taken north to-mor-ro.w night to compete at Wellington. Ogier will not bo taken to Trentham, but will return to Dunedin.
NOTES AND COMMENTS
TBi GlEncor.T A final reminder is given those interested that acceptances for the first day's handicaps at Tremtham close to-night. Nominations for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club'& Aubmn Meeting close tonight. A_food number of local owners have signified their intention of being represented at the Marlborough Bracing Club's Autumn Meeting, which takes place on May 5 and 6. The stakes are good, and oil classes of horses are well catered for. Entries close on Friday, April 16. There is a disposition locally to make Ladoga the choice for the Thompson handicap. The Sir Laddo gliding won the event last year, after acting as run-ner-up to Bronze in the Great Autumn Handicap. S. Eeid is to hav'e the mount In Wednesday's race.
Rewi Pote would seem to be feel'ng the effects of the racing he has done this season. On the second day of .the Feildmg meeting h® was backed down to a very short price m the Denbigh Stakes, but finished last. •' t
Several horses have already put in an appearance at Trentham in view of the Autumn Meeting, which opens on Wed-, nesday next.
Flingot looked like a winner of tlie ICimbolton Hurdles when he blundered at the second fence from home and got rid of his rider. He was quickly caught and remounted by J. Delaucy, and secured third money. • -
Monologue, winner of the Oroua Hack Hurdles at Feilding, very nearly. got-rid of his rider at tho second fence, and he ulso crashed through the third one. After this the chestnut gelding sottled down a lot. and ridden a nice race by M'archant, ho won in good style. He was saddled up again in the Welter Handicap, and ran a creditable third.
Tho stable companions, Bonny Helen and Sunbird, were both started in the Easter Handicap at Feilding. The latter shaped badly, but Bonny Helen gave the impression that she will win 600n.
Square Deal has lightened up a lot with the racing he has done lately, and his owner intends to turn him out for a short spell.
Sir Solo, who has been racing in Melbourne since the spring, returned to Wellington by the Mokoia yesterday. The Sir Laddo gelding is to bo given a spell in the paddocks.
A feature of the win of Warstep in the Great Autumn Handicap was the fact that her winnings for the season now total ,£5560, an amount no other horse has ever equalled in New Zealand. As the mare is to be sent north for the Trentham and Awapuni Gold Cups, it looks ,as if another odd thousand will have to be added to her total for the year. Since she started Taciug the Martian mare has won in stakes the handsome sum of ,£BIBO, and sho may yet reach the ,£IO,OOO mark.
Warstep is certainly a very lucky mare. At Kiecarton she was regarded as lucky to dead-heat with Indigo in the New Zealand Cup, then at Ellerslie she was regauled in a similar light when she defeated Reputation in the Auckland Cup, tho same lias to be recorded as to her victory over Og'ier at Wingatui, and it certainly must bo said about her latest effort.
Tho Porirua team for the Trentham meeting was railed across yesterday. It consists of George, Pavlova, Martyrsss, Coldstream, Stepney, Gold Soult, and lielasco.
When Hoy won the Edeii Handicap, seven furlongs, at Ellerslie, she carried 7st. 101b., and brat, amongst others, Colonel Soult, who was successful in the big handicap on the second day. On this form she is not badly treated with Bat. 41b. in the Thompson and Railway Handicaps at Trentham, and she is certain of strong support in whichever event she starts in.
