TIMBER WORKERS' CONFERENCE
(By Telegraph,—Press Association.) Chrlatchurch, April 7. The Timber Workers' Conference to-; day carried remits: (1) That the Government be urged to give power to local Labour Department officials to proceed against offenders for breaches of awards without having, as at present, to first fefer the case to the head office 1 for official sanction to proceed; (2) that tho Government be urged to grant statutory preference to unionists. A motion was carrriod that the action of the Government and the Foods Commission in failing to protect the people from exploitation be condemned. Remits were also agreed to urging the Government to take up the matter of re-afforestation, urging the Government to proceed with public works in order to provide work for the unemployed during the war crisis, and urging the Governmeut to procure State collieries. The executive for the ensuing year is to bn located* a,t Christchurch. The next conference will bo held at Dunedin next Easter.
