WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION

ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN

SUB-COMMITTEES APPOINTED,

Mr. D. D. Weir has been elected chairman of the Wellington Rugby football Union's executive, vice Mr. E. • retired. Mr. Weir presided at the initial meeting of the year last evening, and .there were also present: Messrs. W. F. Hornig, A. C. Kitto, G. Howe, A. Griffiths, G. Luoni, H. Buck, A. E. Wilson, E. Little, and W. H. Donovan.

Alter his election, Mr, Weir expressed his thanks to members of the executive and promised to use every effort to further the .interests of Rugby and oarry out his responsibilities in a thorough manner. If at any time his work as chairman did not pleaso the committeo ho would be prepared to give way lor a better man. (Applauso.) Mr. W. G. Talbot was re-elected secretary for the current year. The committeo agreed to accept the use of the Pefcone Recreation Ground lor the season on the basis of CO per cent, to- the council and 40 per cent, to the union.

Leave of absence was granted to Mr. P; Ryan, who will be absent from Wellington for a few weeks, i. r - J' P- Firth, headmaster of Wellington College, advised that the college grounds would be available for the season as in previo'us years. ' In regard to Seatoun Park, the chairman was given a free hand to reopen negotiations with the Miramar Borough Council to see if tho use of the ground could be obtained as in previous years, a condition being that "soccer" matches might bo played before 3 p.m. everv Saturday.

Permission was granted' to the Oriental Football Club to play a match against a team from Trentham Military Camp at Athletic Park on Saturday next.

The secretary reported that the sum of £38 had been collected from the Wollington Cricket Association on account of grounds at Athletic Park, rented by the association some few years ago. Sub-committees were elected as follow Postponements, Messrs. Weir, Hornig, and Little; transfers, Messrs. Little, Weir, and the secretary; fixtures, Messrs. Griffiths, Howe, Weir, and Luoni; grounds, Messrs. Weir, Buck, Howe, Hornig, and Donovan; insurance, Messrs. Howe, Wilson, and Hornig; advertising, Messrs. Hornig, Howe, and Little; junior grade fixtures,' Messrs. Little and Luoni; third-class, Messrs. Weir and Griffiths; fourth-class, Messrs. Kitto and Buck; fifth-class, Messrs. Howe and Donovan; sixth-class, Messrs. Wilson and Donovan; Wednesday, Messrs. Howo and Hornig. It was decided to invite nominations from the senior clubs for the positions of selectors, the clubs to state whether the nominees would act alone or with other selectors.

The opening of tho season was fixed for Saturday, April 24, with the seven-a-side tournament, May 1 to., he the dato for tho Belgian benefit match, and May 8 the date for tho commencement of the championship, matches. Wednesday, at 7.15 p.m., was fixed as the time for tho weekly meeting of the executive.

RIFLE-SHOOTING

SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. (By Telegraph,—Press Association.) Ch'rlßtohuroh, April 7. The South Island rifle shooting championships concluded yesterday. In the final match for the belt, ten shots at 700 yards, D. Roots (Patea) won with 48, his aggregate being 328. R. J. Smith (Opaki), Sergeant Chingi J- C. Carter (Petone), and E. Piper (Christchurch) obtained 319 each.
