MARKET CONDITIONS.
Referring to the market ( condition of .local fruit and vegetables, the fruit inspectors of the Orchards, Gardens, and Apiaries Division of the Department of 'Agriculture report as follows • on the -of locally-grown fruit and vegetables in shops and auction rooms, , and the market position of these for tho month of March: —
Auckland.—There lias been a large quantity of fruit handled in the markets f:during the past month. Consignments !jof apples and pears were heavy, and although prices were better than , last ■month, tney have not been good. Quinces and passioufruit are plentiful. Tomatoes are not in such heavy supply and
.values have improved Hothouse grapes ' are in better demand. Good samples of have been hard to obtain. Arrivals, from south Ia re now easing the
imarkets, and a decline in values may. 'tie expected. Green vegetal les are plentiful, demand fair. Tho ruling prices for . rtlift month are as follow: —Apples,choice .dessert, ss. to 65., others 3s. 6d. to 4s. , ;6d.j cookers, best 4s. to 4s. 6d., good 3s. 6d. PearSj dessert: Bon Chretien, 65.; best Capiamonrs, 6s; to 6s. 6d.; other dessert, 4s. to 4s. 6d.; cooking, -3s. 6d. per case. Peaches: Best colourted, 2s. 6d.' to 35.; others, Is. 6d. to 2s. Grapes: Hothouse, best Bd. per lb., good 6d. per lb. Best tomatoes, 2s. to 2s. 3d., sauce Is. to Is. 6d. por case. Lemons, prime, ss. 6d ; . to 6s. per case. Quinces, 3s. per case. Passionfruit, 25.. per half-case. ', Wellington.—The local: markets are well supplied with local fruit this month, . and prices' have eased somewhat. ' Tomatoes are very heavy, and the prices all that can be expected considering tho quantity to hand. Apples are arriving in largo quantities; the grade is small, being mostly of two-inch. Vegetables are also in heavy supply.
