PETONE COURT
At the Petone Court yesterday, before Messrs. A. Coles and J. Piper, J.P.'s, Joseph Hamilton M'Laughlin was charged with tho theft of a gold watch and chain, tho property of h. Harrop, of Nelson Street, Petone, on December 23 last. Defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr. 0. C. Mazengarb. Mrs. Harrop stated in evidence that accused visited hor.house on December 23, and remained until 30r4 in the afternoon. The watch and chain were missed the same evening, and the police were informed. E. Harrop corroborated his wife's evidence. The defendant stated that Mrs. Haxrop had presented tho watch and chain to him. In answer to Sergeant Foster, M'Laughlan admitted having been convicted when a ' boy for theft. Tho Bench considered the charge proven, and defendant was convicted, and fined £5.
