RETURNED EMPTIES

AN APRIL FOOL'S DAY EXPLOIT. From the manner in which Reginald Nelsou Winifred White celebrated April Fool's Day it would be hard to say whether he meant to fool himself, the police, or the owner of two' certain beer barrels. Perhaps it was hcoause there was some affinity between White and the barrels on the day in question. At all events, when lie saw the cart with tlie barrels on lie hoisted one on his shoulder and made off with it. It was an empty cask, but to White it did not seem to matter. The driver of tho cart had, however, observed him, and had hastened off to inform n policeman. Meanwhile White deposited the cask in an ompty section and returned for a Bccond load. He seized another and a larger cask (also empty), and was bearing it proudly on his shoulders 011 tho way to join its companion in tho section when tho constable arrived and arrested him.

"I don't know what possessed me to do it," exclaimed White, when charged with the o/fenco at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. "Yes, empty barrels wevo not much good to you,'.' observed the Magistrate. "You must not go in for such exploits, however," added His Worship, as ho made a note in the book to the effect that. White would_ he fined £!2, in default seven days' imprisonment. The "empties" have been returned to J. Staples antl Co.
