The Political Labour Council Conference executive's recommendation that no one b© admitted to membership of the Labour Party who is at the same time a member of any otber organisation 1 which selects or lends_ support to candidates for public positions was adopted b.v 98 votes to 43. Some opponents of the recommendation claimed that it would debar members of the Catholic . Federation from membership of the Labour Partv. Others pointed out tliat the prohibition embraced all bodies lendinsr support to political candidates, including the Australian Natives' Association and the Rechabit-es. Soveral delegates stated that they regarded it as a direct mandate to nut the welfare of the Labour Partv before that of any religious organisation. A motion to recommit the recommendation with a view to further discussion was negatived.
