"THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS"

STILL GIVING AUTHORITIES TROUBLE. It is _ now nearly two years siuco the now bridge over the Hu,tt River earned the cognomen of the "Bridge of Sighs." At this time the trouble concerned approaches There was the big massive bridge, a picture from an engineering point of view, but the original contract •did not provide for approaches, and each borough thought it was the duty of the other to finish the work. Finally matters were all fixed up, and every local body sighed .with satisfaction. Now the matter of the maintenance of the new bridge and its approaches has cropped up, and already the Mayor of' Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) bas called the Mayor of the Hutt (Mr. H. Baldwin) and the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) into consultation. The original deed under which the bridge was erected cited that the cost of main-, tenance by the five contributing bodies (the Hutt County Council is the one that has not so far been mentioned) should b-3 in tlio same ratio as the cost of construction. At the same time it was deomed expedient that any risk of overlapping in the work of maintenance 6hould be guarded against. One proposal made was that the western approach should be maintained by the Petone Borough Council, the eastern approach by the Hutt Borough Council, and the' bridge itself by the Wellington City Council,, which body would have .in lime to paint the structure and do' any repairs neoded from time to time. As it was not very clearly defined how such an arrangement would result financially, it was finally resolved that the engineers of the three boroughs should confer and report on the technical side of the charges associated with the bridge and its approaches. When that report is available Mr. Luke will call the Mayors of Petoiie and the Hutt to conference once more.
