PLYING START'S SUCCESS.
(By ■ Telegraph;—SDedal CorreajiondenU t. * , , Christchurch, April 5. For the first day of the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting there was ' fine weather and large crowds witnessed some -interesting ■ totalisator investments ■totalled; £37,599, comparod with ,£35,651 30s. for the corresponding day last year ' The oponjcg event was - tho Kildaiw Hurdles, which on form looked a. good ..thing for Daylight Bill,, but Commotion, <iwho stripped very well, .and Naupata with carried a lot .of support, and in the .end" the favourite went out paying what ; seamed a good pricß. Ho jumped oil in ifront,"and pulling very hard led over the Srsfc fence and past the stand. Down ■the back he out-jumped the field, and they soon, tailed off, but rounding the fend Naupata. ra,n up (o him, and thoy Iwere at the last fence together, but . • tfdaupata dipped, and the favourite ran in an easy winner. Commotion, was thiTd, Castiron fourth, and Umorabov jailed os. Xaijthos and Adjutant were withdrawn from the' Champagne Stakes. : The-Choke-;T»re pair (Plying Start and Battle Eve) jwas .the •.public choice,' with. Nones-next jand Bonny Dream the outsider. The ilwo last-named were the quickest to be'?in, and led to the straight proper, whore '(Battle Eve joined tijom. A furlong ifrom home Nones had shaken off the pothers. but Plying Start then appeared, .'and the pair contested stride for stride In g. great finish. Plying Start got tlie Uast stride in, and won by a head. Battle Eve was half a dozen lengths off, and Bonny Dream was a long way back. There were only four runners in the •Autumn Plate. Snapdragon was backed down to a very short price. Teviotdale led from Banian, with Snapdragon on . ft» outside, and Chrysotis tailed off. Bounding the bend the positions were .[unchanged, and the leading trio came up the straight together. At the distance; Chfysotis came with a wet sail, and, smothering the others, she won by a lengfts. The remainder were in a bunoh. itagdala was the eleventh-hour with<drawa! from the Great Easter, field. In Jha bitd-oage Chortle and Emjjeiadot.
were most admired, but several others stripped well. After a slight delay at the barrier, due to over-anxiety on the part of Hatoh (rider of Chortle), the field moved off in a good line, Clynelish being the only one to got a little the worst of it. At the end of a furlonp Croesus was out clear of Chudic,' and then came Emperador and Chortle, with Clynelish and Gold Soult at tho rear of a bunded field. When well into the straight Chortle got up on the inside and Croesus and Emperador came past on' the outside. Chudic was also handy. Chortle and Emperador then settled down to fight out the finish, and when Emperadfir had worn out Chortle, First Glance also passed him. Ladoga, who finished well, was fourth, just clear of Charmilla, Chudic, Peg, and Bonny Rigg, who were in a line. It was a very clean-rnn race, and as far as could be 6een none of tho runners had any bad luck. The whole of tho fifteen acceptors went to the post for the Russley Plate. Several of them were well fancied by tieir connections. When the field entered the course proper the colours of Samiesen and Bellshire were prominent, with the remainder strung out across the field. Over the last furlong 'the position underwent a lightning change, for Deeley rushed Recorder through, and won by a length from Bellshire, with Down, who finished very fast, in third place. Then came Marc Antony and Ardenvohr. , Honesty and Multiply were withdrawn from the Sockburn Handicap, leaving eight runners. Banksia was a good favourite, but after looking all over a winner she tired in tho straight, and. could only'finish fourth. Magdala made play from the favourite with Sauci and Chrysotis whipping the field. ' Magdala was still in charge well down. the straight when Sauci came fast on the outside and scored easily. .Magdala and Chrysotia finished together, just clear of Banksia. .Kilrain was & bad last.
t The inachine recorded Dinner Gfong a good favourite,_ with Medley next in demand in* the Gimcrack Handicap, and" tnis was the order as they passed the post. The favourite Rave a,little trouble at the barrier, but Deeley got* her out well, and. entering the. Straight proper she was in a good position. A furlong from home 'she took oharge, and after a struggle with Medley she won'by a couple of lengths. Encore was close up, and then came Maltegarde, Derby Day, and Art. '
Deeley having ridden three winners on end the public" wanted nothing but hie mount, Multiply, in the concluding event. Volspiel was the next best backed. At the start the favourite jumped out well, but quickly lost his position, and Bon Bain led down the back.'' Bounding the bend Honesty took charge, and led into 'the straight. Here_ Multiply was tailed off, but he put in a great run and overhauled the field, winning by a length from' Volspiel.
