THE AUSTRALIAN CONFERENCE. (Rec. April 5, 8.20 p.m.) Melbourne, April 5. At the annual conference of the Political Labour League, the council adopted resolutions in favour of: (a) No contribution to the insurance against unemployment—premium to be a charge upon the industry; (b) the compulsory school attendance of all children till their sixteenth birthday; (c) a new platform in the plank of the league providing for the regulation of the prices of foodstuffs at any time. THE TOTALISATOR. MR,. HOLMAN'S VIEWS. (Rec. April 6, 0.50 a.m.) Sydney, April 5. The Labour Conference discussed the problem of the totalisator. . Mr. Holman (State Premier) appealed to the delegates not to make this a plank in the party platform. He. was opposed to the totalisator, but was prepared to allow a measure to be passed by Parliament giving race-goers, the opportunity of declaring the style of wagering they favoured. He objected to it being made the crowning triumph of the Labour* movement. They snould not teach the world the spirit of chance, but the - spirit of justice, and that what a man earned should be dependent on his own action and energy. Gambling was the enemy of society, and should not be encouraged, but rather put down.

The Conference resolved that any alteration in the system of • betting should be by a nationalised totalisator system,-, owned and controlled by the State. ' .
