MUEITAI FROM LONDON. The Muritai left London for Barry on February 11 for the purpose of taking in 5000 tons of coal for the long journey to New Zealand. Going down the English Channel the weather was exceptionally bad, and during the run round to the Welsh coal port several huge seas came aboard and carried away railings, etc. Barry was left behind on February 19, and the Ca-pe of Good Hope passed on March 12. For the firot few days out terrific gales were experienced, thence fine weather till the Muritai wae crossing the Southern Ocean. All the way from the Cape to Wellington Heads a. heavy -westerly and northwesterly swell was experienced. The only sbip sighted during the long journey was the same company's Star of India, which left Wellington for Lyttelton early yesterday morning. Captain J Firth if? still in command, and has the lollowing officers -with him:—Chief, Mr. B. Sherrington; second, Mr, G. Horswill; third, Mr. A. Payne; fourth, Mr. C. ITer6ee. Mr. W. Savill and Albion Company has been advised that tho Kia Ora cleared Liverpool on March 30 for Australian ports. The vessel will discharge her cargo oa the other side and ■will come over to New Zealand to load for Home, being duo here about the end of May. WAITEMATA LEAVES 'FRISCO. Fully laden with flour and other cargo, the Union Company's Waitemata left San Francisco on Friday last for Auckland, Wellington, and Sydney. She should show up here about tho beginning of next month. S.S. CUT ABA AT MELBOURNE. The steamer Cuyaba, which was recently purchased by the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company from the Empresa .Fluvial Company of- Uruguay, for seTvico in the New Zealand coastal trade, has arrived at Melbourno. The Cuyaba is a steel screw vessel of 890 tons gross and 536 tons net, and wae built in 1909 by Short Bros., Sunderland. Her dimensions are::—Length, 205 ft.; beam. 33ft.; and depth, 13ft. 10m.; and her dead-weight capacity is 1250 tons. She is fitted with triple expansion, engines of 143 nominal horse-power, having cylinders 17in.. 28in., aud 46in. diameter by 30in. stroke. Power is applied from two singleended boilers with two furnaces each, having e total heating power of 2421 square feet, and working at o, pressure of 1801b. It i 6 understood that she is to he renamed the Zephyr. The Cuyaba left Bahia. Blanca on January 30 for Melbourne with a cargo of produce. She called at Durban on February 20 for coal, leaving two days later. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. Dee, lato second officer of the Arahura, has been promoted to be chief officer of the Kittawa. Messrs. A. W. Cole and R. B. Denniston '—two of the Aparima's cadets—have been. ; successful in passing-their second mate's , examination without any shore coaching or ! instruction. Both cadets have been appointed officers in the Union Company's service. A large number of officers engaged on I steamers in the New Zealand trade have I recently been appointed to the Royal I Naval Reserve, and are serving in various | capacities afloat. Snb-lieutenant H. G. I Hatchwell, R.N.R., late fourth officer of the Tainui-, and elder son of • Captain R. Hatchwell, of Lyttelton, has been appointed to H.M.S. Harrier, a torpedo gunboat. Also serving on the Harrier are Lieutenant A. P. Meisom, late second officer of the Rimutaka; Sub-lieutenant A. E. Weller, late third office.v of the lonic; and Sub-lieu tenant Bayrell Reed, late fourth officer of the Huruniuii.

Mr. Wm. Cunningham, formerly light-house-keeper at Port Nelson, died in W<Siington last weeli from penumonia. Deceased was 38 years in. the service of the Marine Department, and for over six years He was in charge of the Boulder Bank light, retiring from the service about four years ago.

Tho chartered steamer Hackness, en route from Melbourne to New York, has been ordered liere for bunker coal, and is expected to arrive to-morrow.

' The Union Company's steamer Mapourika, which has relieved the Arahura in the West Coast running for a trip, is expected to leave Westport for Nelson, Picton, aud Wellington at midnight to-mor-row.

Reports from the north indicate that the Arapawa, since being engaged in the new service, has been inconvenienced a good deal owing to the unsatisfactory state of the bar at Waitara. The vessel arrived in Kaivha a few days ago after 13 days' detention in Waitara—the longest period since the service was established. The dry weather had so reduced the -water in the river that spring tides had -to be awaited before the steamer was enabled to effect her departure.

Never in- the history of the Port of London has there been so much merchandise stored and waiting to be stored in the dock warehouses, says an exchange. A leading official of the Port, of London Authority informed "The Times" on January 27 that every berth was occupied, and that ',9 liners were anchored off Gravesend waiting for berths to be found for them. The chief difficulty of the Port Authority lies in the lack of labour, and although it has been employing on an average 65C0 men in the place of a normal average of 5000 men, during the last three months, at least 500 more are needed. In tho warehouses of the Port of London Authority alone-there were stored 650,000 tons of goods and an enormous quantity of food stores. These food stores, mainly consist of tea, grain, irozen meat-, canned goods of all sorts, and wine.

On "Wednesday next the Government steamer Hinemoe will visit Cook Strait lights. She will subsequently visit northern lighthouses and signal stations.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Borderdale (bound from Montreal to Wellington) left 'Sydney for Auckland on April 2. She is due here about April 10.

The Sha.TV-Sa.Till liner Karamea, will sail from Wellington for London on Thursday morning next.

Discharge of the Wellington portion of the Hawkes Bay's London cargo will bo completed in time for the liner to leave for Napier to-morrow at 1 p.m. Homeward loading will be commenced, there, and visits will be paid to Gifiborne and M&nganui before the vessel comos on to Wellington to finish loading.
