'O—j ' THE PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT FIRST DAY'S PLAY Having been postponed from Good Friday, the Wellington Provincial Lawn •lenms Associations annual championand handicap tournament opened at Day's Bay on Saturday morning favoured by glorious weather. The courts wero slightly damp in the morning, but improved under the sun's drying influence and played very well indeed. They were not- fully occupied throughout the day, but good progress was made in both handicap and championship events, about 70 games being decided. Spectators were not very numerous, but those who attended wero rewarded by somo interesting play. Among the successful competitors were several visiting ladies. Misses L. D. and It. Hughes (Pahiatua) won an important, 'heat in the championship doubles by deifeating the Misses Stevens (Hutt) and Miss R. Hughes won her first match in ithe championship singles, while in the 'handicap events Mrs. Hume (Blenheim) and Mrs. Pope (Auckland) held their places, and will meet other winners today. The men's championship singles promises to provide a duel between R. N. X. Swanston and J. C. -Peacock, - and as these two are partners in the championship doubles they will probably prove .too good for the opposition. The first day's play did not pass off without some surprises, the most notable of which in the combined championship, when Miss Bennett and Parkinson, of Petone, defeated Miss L. The high wind of the previous day again interfered with play to a considerable extent, and a shower of rain about 4.30 p.m. stopped all matches for the day. Play reached a good standard, and the final Tounds, which will be commenced on Monday, promise some keen contests. Ollivier is in fine form, and has won all his matches so far without difficulty.
