The weather was dull, but the wicket was easy. Southland won the toss and decided to bat. compiling a total of 226 runs. A feature of the Southland innings , was the batting of l'oole, who compiled 77 by 6plendid cricket, scoring freely with an oil-drive. I'he remaining batsmen who reached double figures also batted well. Kamsdcn and Crawford divided tho bowling honours, the former securing four wickets for 63 runs, and the latter five for 60.
