RICCARTON TRACK NOTES

(By Telegraph.—SDceial Correspondent.) Christchurch, March 31. Steady work was the order with trainers this morning, and all work was done on' the plough. Autumnus is keeping sound, and looks as though he will make his fourth start in the Challengo Stakes. He will also be a runner in the Easter Handicap. Plying Stark was given easy pacing this morning.Battle Eve was exercised at the barrier and showed himself a. good beginner. Nightwatch was given some practice at getting out from the barrier, and showed himself fairly smart at finding his feet. Though he has been in commission for a long time it is almost fourteen months since he last raced. On that occasion he was. beaten imto second place in the Middle Park Plate by Sauci. I don't think, says "Tho Looker On" in tho "Evening News" that Emperador was ever better than he is at present. Marc Antony, who galloped a striking Bix furlongs yesterday, looked none the worse for it ito-day. He was given seven furlongs at a solid pace, and covered tho last six in lmin. 21sec. Waistep this morning was jnst as supple and gay as at the beginning of the season. Meltchikoff, who has caught a chill, was not asked to go oat of a canter this morning, and was moving in Tather a cramped fashion. First Glance, who will be Tidden by Wormald in her engagements at the meeting, is keeping fresh and well. Chortle continues to do great \fork. Ho is a better horse now than in November, and is sure to be in tho fronlt rank over the first few for ho is such a good beginner. ■ Athenic has stiffened up behind having caught a chill. Ho does not gallop as well as ho did a month ago. Clynelish- arrived from Oamaru yesterday. He was galloped four furlongs this morning, and reeled it off in 48! sec. no was worked in bandages, and looks on the big side, but no fault could bo found with the way ho handled himself. Petrosus was given very easy pacing. She appears to have trained off. Gowanbrae looks a much better filly than when last 6een out. •Kilineny, who was physicked yesterday. was on' the course doing trotting exeieise in the middle. He looks very rough, has lost all his condition, anil cannot possibly bo ready to raw for months. Proper arrived from tho north yesterday with Naupata and Gold Koult. Both look as if they havo done solid preparations, and are reported to havo given satisfaction in their work. San Sebastian, who was given a couple of .starts from itlio barrier this morning; did- not shape vary well. If ho does not improve when tlm colours are up it must fcpnii his chance of success a I the meeting. Ladoga came, down I'roni Trenthum yesterday, and is said to lie a Mire starter in the Autumn Handicap. Kit rain also arrived by ithe wmo honl. Both look well. SsrloriG ha<* not pleoced quite at. much

as usual in the work ho has accomplished. H. Donovan will ride him in the Easter Handicap. Chrysotis was showing, if anything, more decided lamoness than sho did yesterday. She is always a. very slow beginner, and as the lameness is behind it must make her slower to find her feet. Snub has quito got over lfis lameness, and moves with tho greatest freodom while doing strong work. Ho is booked to raco at Wellington. Scotch Melody, who was given trottlDg e.verciiio on the lead, has nothing wrong witii hor, and looks in tho very best of health. Peg has boon responsible for a lot of solid work, and has stood up to iit in a very .■satisfactory manner. She will be a runner in tho Easter Handicap. Croesus was given very gentle exorcise. He has lightened a shade since ho arrived from the north. Tannliauser was given strong half-pane work, and did not look too sound as she walked of! tho course. After coolin" down her front fetlock joints looked ugly. Ogier was not worked this morning. Chudic, pulling hard, ran the last six furlongs of a round in lmin. 19sec. He does not givo any bother when worked, with a hood on. Many track watchors like Nones s chance in the Champage Stakes. Corie has not been given much fast work of late.

TRACK WORK AT ELLERBLIE.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, March 31. Moat of the horses at Ellerslie this morning were confined to steady pacing. Hoy galloped seven furlongs on the inside glass, the last six in lmin. 18 Msec. Lady Alioia covered seven furlongs on tho sand, the last four in 51 2-ssec. Belasco and Sportsman arrived yesterday.
