NAUTICAL INQUIRY
<f WAIMAREI-TANIWHA COLLISION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, March 30. The Court- of Inquiry into the collision between two of tho Northern S.S. Company's steamers in Ponui Passage on March 9 has concluded. _ The Court was of the unanimous opinion that the collision was due to the failure of Swarin, second officer of tho Waimarei, lo comply with the regulations regarding the starboard rule in tho case of' a narrow' channel; also that steam vessels must not cftss one another's course without sounding certain signals. His excuse, "that he thought the Taniwha was taking the Ponui side of the channel," was, in the Court's opinion, not i»stificd. The Court also found that the officer in charge of the Taniwha also disobeyed the company's regulation in not calling the captain, but _ com-. mended Ki's conduct in handling his vessel to avert a serious collision. The Court understood that Swann had lost his position with tho company, and ordered him to pay £10 towards tho costs of the inquiry.
