Recently the shipmasters of Auckland laid stress on the urgent need for o light on Flat Hock, near hewau, which, at certain tides, and always at night time, constitutes a serious menace to East Coe.st shipping. Captain W. Ross, chairman of the Lighthouse Petitions Committee, has now received the following letter from tho Hon. W. H. HerriesAdverting to that part of your letter of March 8, in which you ask when an automatic light will be erected on Flat Rock, I have to state that the necessary light has already been ordered, and steps have been taken to alter tho beacon which now stands on the rock to make it fit for holding the light. This work will be done by the time tho light ia received from Europo, and the work of erecting the light will then be put in hand."
