The Right Hon. W. F. Massey, Prima Minister, has gone to Auckland to attend the funeral of the late Mr. John Bollard. He is expected to return to Wellington this afternoon. The Hon. J. Allen returned from Gisborne last night by the Napier express. Mr. J, H. Esoott, M.P., is In Wellington on business connected with his constituency. Yesterday, _ by command of His Mar jesty the King, the Governor performed the ceromony of knighting Mr. James Glenny Wilson, and at the same time His Exoellenoy presented the insignia of a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michaol and St. George to Mr, George Hogben. . Mr. John Withers, R.N., formerly ohief officer of the Ophir, and son of Mr. W. Withers, of Wadestown, who had retired from the' sea to reside in Derbyshire, England,' offered his services to the Admiralty soon after war broke out. but being over forty years of age and married, The was not acceptr ed. Later on he was called on to report to the Admiralty', but so great had been his anxiety to get into form that he strained his heart whilst training, and will not be fit for service for a month or two. Lady Guinness and Miss Guinness, of Greymouth, left for Sydney by the Maoiuka yesterday afternoon. The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, president, ( the Hon. A. L. Herdman, and Mr. Walter Bethune, vice-presidents, have resigned their positions in tie Royal Choral Society. Amongst the passengers from the south by the Maori yesterday morning were Mr. ■ Craigie, M.P. for Timaru, Mr. H. W. Kersley, Dr. Finch (District Health Officer for Wellington), Mr. G. H. Hanking,' of the Telegraph Department of the Wellington Post Office, has, says our Napier correspondent, received notice of his transfer to Napier for a period of six months. He .will be replaced by Mr. J. O'Donovan, lof Napier. Colonel Goring has been elected chief •officer of the Hastings branch of tho New Zealand National Reserve, with Messrs. L. P. Pegler and F. Nelson first and second lieutenants respectively. Passengers for Sydney by the Manuka yesterday included Messrs. E. P. Broad and Paton, two prominent Sydney business men; Mrs. and Miss Collins and . maid, of Christchurch; Mr. and Mrs. H. Humphries,' of Napier; Mrs. Fitzherbert, of Wellington; and Miss G. Webster (sister of Dr. Garcia .Webster). Mr. and Mrs. Arthur H. Hoby, of iWellington, left for Sydney by the Maauka yesterday.

The death 1 occurred at the Nelson Hospital on Friday of last week of Mr. William F. Ham, whose Bon died in Egypt recently from wounds received ..'in aotion against the Turks. Mr. Ham, who was a native of Ireland, belonged to a family, which has numerous associations with the Army, not only in the past but at the present time. Tho cause of death was pneumonia and heart failure.. .. • Mr. J. Enwright, a well-known merchant at Westport. is at present staying at the Royal Oak Hotel, Mr. Enwright will leave Wellington for Westport by the Arahura to-morrow. Mr. Chas. Greenland, secretary of ; the Westport Harbour Board, is at present in Wellington. He will leave for iWestport by the Arahura to-morrow. At a meeting of the Wairarapa Presbytery yesterday it was decided to hand tho call from St. Andrew's Church, Christchuroh, to the Rev. A. T. Thompson, M.A., 8.D., who has been nearly nine years in chargo of Knox Church, Masterton, The Rav. Mr. Thompson announced that after mature considers tion he had decided to accept the call, Rnd he will leave for Christchurch in about , three weeks' time. Mr. Kenyon Elder, second son of the late Mr. Austin Elder, Langdale, Mastarton, has left for England with tho Australian Expeditionary Force. The wife of Admiral Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee is a Melbourne woman. At tho time of their marriage the distinguished sailor (who was not then so well known as he is now) was in command of the Porpoise in Australian waters. The death took place in Auckland on Tuesday of Mr. Thomas Vincent, a wellknown millwright and contractor, who had been associated with the firm of Mr. H. H. Metcalfe for the past thirty years. Deceased was about seventyfive years of age, and was widely known, _ Constable G.. T. Baker, who has been w charge of Featherston Police Station for the past eight years, is beinc •transferred to Paeroa.
