OLD SOLDIERS' CLAIMS
THE WORK OF THE COMMISSION. Colonel Porter, C.8., Colonel Newall, 0.8., Captain Mair, members of tho Commission appointed by'the Goveminent to inquire into old soldiers' claims for the New Zealand medal (and the pension attaching to that honour) leave for Palmerston North this morning 011 official business, and to visit Captain Preece, N.Z.C., who met with a bicycle accident about a week ago. As far as the inquiry into fclaims for the New Zealand medal is concerned, the work of the Commission is almost done, and the result is, in brief, that between 1400 and 1500 old soldiers, who fought so well in days of yore, will now be entitled to. the pension of £36 per annum. Another duty has now devolved upon the Commission. Years ago many claims were made for the New Zealand Cross that wero rejected on tho evidence then available to the authorities. Among them was one, which has since been reconsidered, and the Cross awarded. This case has brought about the rovival of several of tho old claims, and it is these that are now to be investigated by the Commission.
