OAMARU HOTEL FIRE
DECISION OF THE MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Oamaru, March 24. Mr. Bartholomew, _ S M., gave a lengthy judgment this morning regarding the Star and Garter fire inquiry.. He concluded: "After giving the fullest consideration to the whole evidence, I must say that Clark's story still persists as a weighty indictment. In endeavouring to come to a definite finding I must proceed on the principles of proof applicable to a criminal trial. A person cannot be condemned for a serious crime on a balancing of probabilities, but guilt must be proved beyond reasonable doubt. I am unable to make any express finding. My formal verdict is: 'The Star and Garter Hotel was partly destroyed by fire on February 14, 1915, which originated in the vicinity of rooms 35, 36, and 37, in what is known as the old building, but there is not sufficient evidence to show how the said fire was caused. 1 '
