TRAMWAY WORKSHOPS
TO BE ERECTED AT KILBIRNIE. With the steady increase in the \\? 1( ir a L o£ r< ! llUls st<!cll engaged in the H eilmgton tramways system, it has been found necessary to provide further shed accommodation. In order to- have cars available for early services east of iAlount Victoria, it has been decided to erect a depot on a section which has already been acquired on-Onepu Road,' couth Kilbirnie. Further accommodap tion for workshops, car-cleaning, and housing was to have been provided bv extending the Newtown shed right back to the boundary of Newtown Park Now, however, the Tramways Manager (Mr. W, H. Morton), having gone thoroughly into the matter of depot and workshop accommodation with an eye to future developments, has recommended the acquisition of an. area of land, about four acres in all,-on the Seatoun Road, not far from its junction with Onepu Road, > where he suggests that an up-to-date repairs workshop and depot should be erected. Such a shed should meet the requirements of the service for some time to come, and the council has adopted the suggestion as it is a comprehensive, and, in the end, likely to be a more economical one than building here and there as actual necessity dictated. The matter of finance will engage the attention of the council as soon as Mr. Morton's report is available.
