BACK FROM SAMOA

NAMES OF LOCAL MEN SOME MAY GO TO EUROPE FOURTEEN DAYS' LEAVE Yesterday morning a number of the [Wellington men who formed' portion of the New Zealand Force which took Samoa on August 29 arrived back in 'New Zealand. Many of the men look to be in excellent health, but a certain number of them are home on sick leave. iThe men will be given leave from military duty - for a while, and will afterwa/rds have an opportunity of going iwith the forces to Europe. The force was met at the wharf by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon W. iF. Massey), the Minister of Defence (the Hon. James Allen), the Commandant of the New Zealand Military Forceß (Colonel Robin), the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke), and relatives and friends;" Addressing the troops, the Prime Minister said that they were welcome home. He thanked them for their good work,.and remarked that they had made (history; they had been the first British force to take German territory. Even sow' their opportunities -were not'at an. end, and they would have opportunities of going to the front. The Minister of Defence also spoke. He too thanked the men for .the good services they had rendered. He was glad .that both officers and men had done •their duty. He hoped that the men had Jearnad what it was to have respect for ifcheir officers, and he hoped that the 'officers had learned how to know their men. If he knew anything of the British Army to-day, its strength lay in the respect which the officers and the men had for each other. He knew thatwhen the Samoan men went to the front, further good reports would be heard of them. The' Mayor extended the force a welcome on behalf of the oitizens. From the boatside the men were marched to the military barracks, and later in the day were sent to Trentham. Last evening they were granted fourteen 'days' leave of absence. The Talune (by which vessel the force returned) left Samoa on March 10, and arrived in Wellington harbour on Sun'diy night. Lieut.-Colonel Fulton is in fcharge of the force. Yesterday afternoon those on sick leave were paid at the Buckle Street barracks. Fairly large cheques were 'drawn. The men state that they had a good return trip, and much enjoyed the voyage. . The Wellington members of the garJrfson who returned are; Regimental Staff. Lieutenant-Colonel H. T. Fulton, 5D.5.0. Captain G. E. Simeon. Lieutenants P. Y. Backworth and J. JJ. Swan.
