DREDGING THE HARBOUR

WHAKARIRE'S GOOD WORK. In the course of hip annual report Mr. Jas. Marchbanks, engineer to the .Wellington Harbour Board, says:— "The board's dredge Whakarire has, during the year, been working partly ■on' the Falcon Shoal and partly about .the wharves ui Lambton Harbour. Some time was lost during the strike, and during the past few_ months, owing to the a,wkward localities in which the .dredge was/required to work, the rate lof digging was materially lower than last year. Further, a considerable proportion of the material lifted near Te •!Aro could not be pumped ashore but had to be discharged at sea. Altogether 316,900 tons were lifted, of which 252,600 tons were pumped ashore land 64.350 tons discharged at sea. "Of the quantity dredged 209,300 'tons were obtained from the Falcon Shoal, 11,450 tons from the eastern side of Taranalti Street Wharf, 23,400 '.•tons from Jervois Quay and' from No. >1 Queen's Wharf, 62,150 tons from the ,site of the projected Te- Aro Wharf, and ?10,600 tons from adjoining the Clyde "fQuay Wharf, of which a portion was 'lifted from the west side of this wharf >in front of the City Corporation culi vert which discharges there. This berth fjbas.. been dredged three times within '■jthe last five years, due to the discharge jiof silt and detritus into the harbour. \. "As soon as opportunity offers, the .'berths on each side of the Glasgow i jWharf will be gone over and cleaned /Up. There has been some diminution ; y>f depth midway between the Glasgow (and King's Wharves and between "the Glasgow and Railway Wharves, due 'partially to coaling operations. It is 'also proposed to deepen t'he outer berth joa the east side of the King's Wharf /'so as to provide a minimum depth of j:BS feet helow low water springs. { _ "After the Waterloo Quay reclamation and the work indicated ahove has jibeen dompleted there will be no necessity ' to keep the Whakarire continuously 'employed, and it will be possible, -.'should occasion arise, to charter the 'diedge to another board requiring its ■services, or jtossibly an arrangement might be arrived at with the Railway • to do some of the reclamation which is contemplated at Thornf'don in connection with the new station t££rd,"-
