AMERICAN HOSTILITY

[To the Editor.] Sir, —The attitude of America in the present crisis is simply nauseating to an overwhelming majority of Britishers, and although we are informed by travellers and others that the majority of the American people are in favour of the Allies, yet thoso who count and lead public opinion are undoubtedly antagonistic. . No need, to iterate the facts of Britain's moral. support to America at different crises, when no doubt we were prepared to give physical aid if necessary. Therefore their present attitude is all the more despicable. If another American squadron, travelled to these shores at the present time the men would-find themselves very unwelcome and unpopular visitors. The later cables indicate America's hostility to the Allies' blockade—but put it this way: The Germans, through their overwhelming army, have scorcd heavily over Belgium and France; and Britain, with their overwhelming navy, is scoring against Germany. But America wishes England to drop the superiority of the Navy in favour of Germany, thereby allowing Germany to prosecute the war with renewed vigour, costing the Allies millions of pounds and thousands of lives, and for what? To oblige pro-Ger-man America. What a satire to erect Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty, and give all their nation's support to accentuated despotism. The crisis has not cost America a singl© life or a sovereign, for ■war expenses, but she prefers battle, murder, and sudden death to anyone so long as her wretched dollars are not interfered with. I think, ako, where possible trade should de deflected from America and placed elsewhere. I am, etc., 0. F. DOWSETT. Waitara.
