SAMOAN GARRISON
SOME CIVIL SERVANTS REMAINING. It is generally known that the present Samoan garrison is to be withdrawn, to be replaced by a body of older men, and that tho bulk of tho present garrison are leaving New Zealand shortly for s'Mvico at front. Several non-commissioned officers and men of the present garrison have been employed at Samoa as Civil Servants, in those Departments controlling the administration of justicc, tho collection of taxes, and the control of tho post office. These functions of State had, of course, to be carried on by the occupying military force, and the men in theso posts were asked to retain them until tho conclusion of the war. It should not be concluded, the Minister of Defence explains, that these men prefer to remain in civil employment rather than to go to fight. Every one of the men much preferred to voiunteer for the front, but it was pointed out to them by tho Administrator that they would be doing equally good service by remaining in their positions at Samoa. At this special request they liavo agreed to remain.
