DE WET ON TRIAL
SOUTH AFRICAN REBELLION RACIAL SENTIMENT (Rec. March 19, 5 55 p.m.) London, March 18. The trial of Do Wet for rebellion has begun at Bloenifontoin. The courthouse was thronged, many in the audienco apparently sympathising with tho rebels. Evidence was given that Do Wet had been strongly influenced by racial sentiment, which lie had restrained for years. He was the catspaw of General Hertzog. When General Botha (Prime Minister) asked Mr. Steyn (ex-President of the Orange Free State) to use his influence to prevent a robelliou, Steyn sent Hertzog to appeal to Do Wet. The latter's reply was that Botlm must resign and agree to the proclamation of a republic. —"Times" and Sydney "Sun" services.
