ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL
.WATER SUPPLY QUESTION. Tire ordinary meeting of the Onslow Borough Council was held last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr; C. C. Crump) and Councillors B. Lynneberg, J. 0. Gardner, L. A. Browne, R. A. Nicol, A. H. Hoby, E. C. Alderson, and G. Bowden. A deputation of nine from Ngaio Ward waited on the counoil regarding the water question, and. presented a testimonial signed by numerous ratepayers requesting that a scheme for a gravitation water scheme should bo submitted to the ratepayers. It was pointed out that the dangers from fire, and the ultimate need for drainage, warranted the going on with suoh a scheme. Mr. Houidsworth referred io the recent newspaper correspondence on the subjeot. and stated that the men who hid behind a nom de plume did not have the interests of the borough at heart, hut were concerned more for their own pockets than for anything else. ; Other speakers 'said l that the lack of a water supply scheme made the place remain stagnant, and property was lying idle. It was mostly the large landholders who were afraid of a little taxation who were opposed to the' Scheme. The Mayor said that the council was pleased to receive the deputation. They realised' that the work done by the deputation had been in the interests, of tlje borough._ The petition, would help the council in. their further deliberations, and he hoped the soheme would be put through, and would be a'success. 0e thought that the people who "did not oome out in their own colours" would realise this time that the ratepayers of Onslow wanted a water supply scheme. In conclusion, he promised that the matter would be discussed, and when they had arrived at a deoißion the result would .be notified to the members of the deputation. He took it that the deputation was thoroughly representative of Ngaio and Khandallah. (Applause.) . District fund accounts amounting to £1014 6s. 9d. were passed for payment. The offer of Mrs.'Reid to accept £35' for the strip of land required for road widening purposes between Mona Crescent and an unnamed street in Khandallah was accepted. It was also decided to offer Mr. Drysdale £15 for tho small strip of land required for the same purpose. The engineer was instructed to report further on the tannery drain, and it was' decided that the flow "from tie drain should he diverted in such a way that it would run out under the Hutt Road bridge. The secretory of the Wellington Fire Underwriters' Association forwarded a proposal regarding the storage of dangerous goods, and suggesting that it should be included as a borough by-law. —It was decided that the matter should stand over for the new council.
