SYDNEY'S CITY RAILWAY
A GREAT RE-PLANNING SCHEME. Sydney, March 18. The Hon. J. H. Cann states that in all probability the city railway' will be commenced in July. . The projected city railway scheme is one of the great publio works to be carried out under the Norton Griffiths contract with the Government. The 6cheme, as originally approved (states the "Sydney Daily Telegraph"), _ provided for the junction with the existing railway system at Redfern Station on the north side of the Wells Street overbridge, and falling on a grade of 1 in 10, tho tracks to run underground bofore reaching Prince Alfred Park. From this the line was wholly underground_ around the cit.y, three tracks traversing the western side, and returning on the eastern side, via Hyde Park, thus forming a loop railway. Provision was made for underground stations at Central Station, under George Street in front of the Town Hall, under Wynyard Square, under Circular Quay, and Under Hyde Park at St. James's Road and Liverpool Street, respectively. As the outcome of Mr. Bradfield's close study of the methods adopted in other largo centres for the handling of dense railway traffic, it was apparent that tho efficiency of tho scheme could be very much increased by certain _ modifications. These consist principally of raising the level at two pointsj i.e., from Redfern Station to Goulburn Street, and at Circular Quay, thus' making these portions of the system above ground, instead of underground, as previously intended, but following practically the same location. .
