General) referred the question of t£e heavy inorease in the price of books and magazines to the Commodities Commission, which has decided not to treat them as a necessary, commodity. NEW GOLDFIELD IN NEW SOUTH WALES. (Ree. March 17, 10.15 p.m.) Sydney, March 17. A promising goldfield has-been found in the Newbridge distriot. The reef is twenty feet wide, and the stone is estimated to return from two to three ounces to the ton. Considerable pegging of claims is going on. A MYSTERIOUS CRIME. Adelaide, March 17. An old man named W._ E. Scott, in the Burra district, while sitting reading his Bible was killed by a shot that was fired through the window of the room. There is no clue to the perpetrator. DYSENTERY AT THE SOLOMON ISLANDS. (Rec. March 17, 10.15 p.m.) Sydney, March 17. News from the Solomon Islands states that there is a serious outbreak of dysentery, with many deaths amongst Natives. SMALLPOX IN A LASCAR CREW. (Ree. March 17, 11.30 p.m.) .Sydney, March 17. The steamer Chauda, from Calcutta, had two Lascars on board suffering from smallpox. One is dead.
