RUSSIAN VICTORY IN BUKOWINA
BIG BATTLE REPORTED AUSTRIANS RETREAT WITH HEAVY LOSSES Bucharest, March 17. It is reported that- a big battle has taken place at Novosielitza, in Bukowina, and that the Austrians retreated with heavy losses. [Novosielitza is at tho junction of the frontiers of Russia, Bukowina. and Rumania.] PERILOUS TASK IN THE CARPATHIANS. Petrograd, March 16. Official.—The Russian advance in tho Carpathians is slow. Tile troops have to move slowly in Indian file, along beaten paths, this involving heavy losses. SEVERE FIGHTING IN THE SNOW The High Commissioner reports: — Petrograd reports:—"ln the Carpathians, despite the snow and severe cold, the Russians carried the last of the Austrian positions in the Smolnik region, taking 2400 prisoners. "In Eastern Galicia the Russians captured the fortifications and took two thousand prisoners. "Before Przemvsl the Russians on the northern front have carried the 'heights within rifle shot of the protecting forts." AUSTRIA'S VANISHING FOOD SUPPLIES. London, March 16. Router's Venice correspondent states that a further restriction on the sale of bread and flour in Austria is regarded as highly significant. It is feared that foodstuffs will not last until next harvest. LATEST REPORT ON PRUSSIAN CASUALTIES. Copenhagon, March 16. The last eight Prussian lists record 33,142 casualties, including eleven airmen killed. RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE IN POLAND VILLAGES STORMED AND PRISONERS TAKEN. (Rec. March 17, 10.15 p.m.) Petrograd, March 16.. Official.—"Our offensive continues in the Niemen, Orziec, and Prasnysz districts." . . The High Commissioner's report (dated London, March 16, 3.50 a.m.) "Reports from Petrograd state that on the left bank of th® Niemen adi vanced parties of the enemy, were dislodged from Kopciowe. "The Russian offensive on both banks of the Orziec is progressing, German guns and fully six hundred prisoners being taken, and two villages stormed. "Tho enemy's bombardment on the fortifications on tho Bzura aro more aC %,e German offensive in the Pilica region has been fruitless."
