CRUISER'S DASH THROUGH THE NARROWS
4 —; BRAVES THE DARDANELLES MINE - FIELDS RUSSIAN VICTORY IN BUKOWINA TERRIFIC ATTACK ON THE BRITISH 'X ■ GERMANS SUFFER HUGE LOSSES AMERICA AND THE BLOCKADE DECREE The war news to-day is somewhat scrappy. The progress of the Allied fleets in the Dardanelles may bo gauged from the fact that the British light cruiser Amethyst, braving the Turkish minefields in the Narrows, made a dash through to' Nagara, the Turkish fleet base. In the Western theatre the British have beeu in some heavy fighting, and have successfully resisted an almost overwhelming attempt by massed troops of the enemy near Ypres and at St. Eloi to make a return score for their rout at Neuve Chapelle. "A brilliantly-executed enterprise," is Sir John French's description of the British capture of the village of L'Epinette. On the. rest of this • front the Allies have maintained their ascendancy. In the Eastern theatre the Russians are credited ivith an important victory in Bukowina, with heavy losses to tho Austrians, while in Galicia and ill the East Prussian operations matters are going well with the Russians. The United States, we arc told, proposes to deliver an "immediate and'vigorous" protest against the British blockade decree. The Germans have captured a Swedish steamer and towed the neutral to a German port. New- aspects of the Italian war crisis are disclosed in to-day's news, while tho relations between Greece and .the Triple Entente are tho subject of interesting disclosures by M. Venizelos (the ex-Premier). ,
