Macintosh (members of the Camp Sub-committee of tho Mayor's Patriotic Fund) paid a visit to the Trentham Camp yesterday in order to see how the men are .faring, and to make arrangements in connection with the sot of brass band instruments which aro to be at the disposal of the troops in camp. Mr. Gordon Bender has Been appointed dental surgeon in charge of tn& new dental department of the Wellington Hospital. He will have the assistance of ail honorary staff of twenty-one dentists, wild will attend in pairs betwoen tho hours of 9.30 a.m. and 11.30_ a.m. each Monday,' Wednesday, and Friday. The headquarters of the 2nd Battalion aro at Romford, where a camp is being pre- ' pared for tho three months' training. Colonel Paget is in command, and there are a number of gentleman rankers in the corps. The qualifications for joining the Sportsmen's Battalions are good riding, shooting, and marching. ' Of last year's management committee of the Wellington Football Association, Messrs. W. M. Matheson, J. W. Black, and J. B. Paton have left New Zealand with the Expeditionary Forces. All three have in tho past. represented Wellington on the football field, but Mr. J. B. Paton has been the best known of the trio, having been a past chairman of the W.F.A., and selector of Wellington representative toams. Mr. John Fuller, jun., has Teturned to Wellington, from a trip to, Australia. Mr. G. M. Yores, formerly of the firm of Yerex and Jones, of this cfty,' was a passenger from Papeete to .Wellington by the Marania. Dr. D. 31. Y. Sominerville (St. 'Andrew's), Professor of Mathematics at Victoria College, and Dr. E. Marsden (Manchester), Professor of Physics at tho same institution, arrived from the Old Country via Auckland yesterday afternoon, and were present at the meeting of the. Victoria College Council last night. On behalf of the council the chairman (Mr. H. H. Ostler) welcomed tho now professors, and expressed the hope that they would find pleasure in their new work and would render as useful service to the college as their predecessors had done. Mr. Harry Treseder, for many years Public Works Engineer at Invercargill, has been transferred to the Lands and Survey Department of Otago. Mr. Treseder was a well-known representative footballer in his day. Mr. Cedric Smith, only son of Mr. H. R, Smith, Town Clerk of Christchurch, has proceeded to Trentham to join the Fifth Reinforcements. Fleet-Paymaster D. S., 0. Grant, R.N., who was well known in Australasia—he served two commissions on the ■Australian station—was accidentally killed at Shcerness Barracks on January 19. Mr. Grant was handling a revolver when tho weapon exploded, and the charge entering his heart he expired immediately. Mr. Grant was very widely known in the service. Xicutenant J. L. Turnbull, Ist,(Canterbury) Regiment, who has been appointed on probation to tho 6th Reinforcements, is the son of Mr. A. H. Turnbull, of A. H. Turnbull and Company, tho well-known Christchurch shipping agents. Ho was educated at Christ's Collego, and has always been connected with the defence movement. Ho was Colonel G. J. Smith's staff officer during the time the Expeditionary Force was encamped in Christchurch, and since then has been assisting Captain Burn in adjutant duties in connection with tho Ist (Canterbury) Regiment.
