The Marama was originally duo at Wellington from the Californian port on February. 25, but on account of on accident whilst entering the Golden Gate certain, repairs were necessary and the liner was considerably delayed. According to an American paper -the accident happened as follows:-Steaming into San Francisoo in a fog at about 6 o'clock on the morning of January 25, the Union Company's R.M.S., Marama bumped ,on a sand bar off Point Montara, a few miles south of the Cliff House. Some of the plates were spraing, and water entered the forward, compartment between the double bottoms, but the ship backed off and proceeded into port, gaining a slight list to the starboard as she proceeded. The vessel, after discharging her cargo, -was placed in 'dry dock, and a'survey made of her bottom. It was found that hetween fifty and sixty plates were bent, buckled, or damaged, and fully six' of these were punctured by tho impact against the sharp rocks. ' An inquiry into the grounding was held before the British Consul at San Francisco, but the regular nautical inquiry will take place on the arrival of the vessel at Sydney. It is understood that Captain Crawford attributes the michap to a discrepancy between the lights leading into San Francisco, as shown on' the chart, and as they actually exist at the present time.
