The Dresden, which mvs; teriously disappeared after the Falkland Islands' battle, has been caught off tie Pacific Island of' Juan Fernandez, by the British'war- ? ships Kent and Glasgow, with their armed consort the Orama, and • after a battle which lasted for five minutes, has been sent to the bottom. Her crew hoisted the white flag and surrendered. There are further details in to-day's war news of the recent exploits of the German submarine U29 off the south-west coast of England. The sinking of the American ship William Frye is absorbing the attention of Washington, which anticipates that Germany will make due apology and amends for the piratical act of the Prinz Eitel Friedrich in sinking a neutral vessel. The British Government has now proclaimed a throttling blockade of Germany, and the.terms of the decree, published in the "Gazette," are sufficiently drastic to effectively strangle the enemy. On land, there is great activity along the Western front, and the Allies have not only successfully dealt' .with German counter-attacks, but have made substantial progress at certain points. The French have again distinguished themselves, this time in a' brilliant infantry attack at Notre Dame de Lorette. In the Eastern theatre the Russian offensive towards the East Prussian frontier has made great progress, and the lines of the two great armies of the belligerents are so close that largo masses of troops are unable to move freely. In Galicia the operations of the Russians in the vioinity'of! Frzeinysl ; 'ha > ve' : fesultcd'in the ■ attainment of a position favourable for tho administration of the coup-de-grace, and the bombardment of the beleaguered strong hold has now commenced. Fighting continues in the Carpathians. There is no new development of the naval' situation in tho Dardanelles. Vice-Admiral Garden predicts that the Strait will be forced, by Easter. German intrigue is busy in the Balkans, special effort is being made to embroil Bulgaria with the Allies.' Earl Kitchener has delivered a powerful speech in the House of Lords, and has uttered a grave warning on the subject of Britain's supplies of war munitions and the necessity for in- | creasing tho output. The Defence of tho Realm Act Amendment Bill was read a second time under .the influence of the War Minister's note.
