MARAMA ARRIVES. 7 P.M. Bound from San Francisco to' Sydney the Union Company's R.M.S. Marama is due in the stream at Wellington at 7 p.m. today. The , vessel will, not berth here, but will continue her journey on to the New South Wales port an hour or two after arrival. AMOKURA ON A CRUISE. After having taken in stores, etc., alongside the wharf yesterday, the Government training ship Amokura'went out to an. anchorage in' the stream preparatory to sailing for the outlying southerly islands of : New Zealand early this morning In order that several new boys may have an opportunity of gaining their "sea legs," the Amokura will remain in the vicipity of Cook Strait for a few days before proceeding on to Dunedin and the Bluff to coal and provision. She will leave the Bluff about March 23 or March 30 for the Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes, and Bounty Islands, in order to ispect the various depots ad search for castaways. The Amokura will probably bo absent from the Bluff for about four weeks. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. Loraine, third engineer of the Koromiko, has been granted holiday leave, and Mr. H. W. Robinson, late acting-sec-ond of the Navua, has been appointed to fill the vacancyMr. J. H. Newton has rejoined the Karon as chief engineer, and Mr.. K. Gunn, third engineer, has come ashore. Captain Simpson is in charge- of the Westport Harbour Board's dredgo Eileen Ward, now at Wellington, and his officers are es follow:—Mate, Mr. Lennard; chief engineer, Mr. M'Diarmid; second, Mr. T. Aitchison; third, .Mr. J. Mathews. Up till an early hour this morning there was no sign of the Japanese steamer Keishin Maru, from San Francisco. The vessel, which is coming down under charter to ■ the Union Company, should 6h'ow up at Wellington to-day. The Union Company has decided to send the ferry steamer Wahino from Wellington to Picton on an excursion, on Easter Monday. On account of having been delayed at pier by heavy weather the C.. and D. liner Star of Australia will not arrive at Wellington from London till to-morrow. Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co. are taking advantage of the Panama Canal to develop a round-the-world steamship service, which will be linked up with their, existing services (says the Mersey correspondent of the "London Shipping World"). They aro establishing what they designate as tho Panama Canal service, which . will run fortnightly from Liverpool to Victorio, via the Panama Canal, and touching at the Pacific porta of San Francisco, Seattle, Tocoma, and Vancouver. Before coming on to Wellington on March 26 the C. and -D. liner Hawke's Bay will put out 2000 tons of London cargo at Auckland. The Union ste&mor Karamu arrived at Wellington from Onehunga yesterday morning, and was ordered on to. Dunedin. An expected arrival at Wellington from San. Francisco any time now is the Japanese steamer Keishin Maru. She has been chartered by the Union Company to bring a general cargo, amounting to 4500 tons, down from the Pacific Slopo to Wellington. The Minister of Marino has directed the Collector of Customs at Auckland to hold a Magisterial inquiry into the collision between the coastal steamers Taniwha and Waimarie, which occurred near Ponui lighthouse, Auckland, on Wednesday evening. Both steamers were running between Auckland and Pacroa, and met in. the Channel at its narrowest point. At the moment of the collision the bow of the Taniwha struck the Waimarie on the starboard quarter, knocking in the planking between two posts and leaving a- depression a few inches deep. Fortunately the "damage was at somo height above the water. The Taniwha was practically undamaged. and both, steamers wont on their way - without stopping. For the purpose of conveying 2500 sheep from Wellington to Lyttclton, tho Union steamer Whangape is due in port to-day. Sho will sail for tho southern port a, few hours after arrival. Due at Wellington from northern ports this morning, tho Monowai will land 575 tons of cargo here before proceeding on to southern • ports. Present arrangements are that tho ShawSavill liner Tainui will leave Port Chalmers for Lyttelton to-day to continue Homeward loading. The vessel is due here on Friday, March 19. and will leave this port finally for London next week. The Arahurn arrived at Greymoutli from Wellington, via. way ports, at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. She left on tho return trin at 8 p.m., and will continue her journey from Westport at. 9 a.m. to-day.
