ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

PECULIAR DROWNING FATALITY. (By Telegraph-Press Associations Olsborne, March 14. A drowning fatality occurred on the Kaiti beach some time between 7 and 8 o'clock on Saturday alight, which resulted in the death of James Hannigan a married man, aged about 43. Hannigan, who was employed by Messrs. Lauglanas and Staiinard, contractors for the breakwater exteasiou contract, was m town on Saturday afternoon in company with Arthur l'reston, another omployee of the firm. The pair set out for their home on the Kaiti beach in a gig shortly, before 7 p.m. on Saturday. Preston was dropped at his camp near Pa Hill, and Hannigan drove on alone to his camp, some mile and a half-fur-ther on. This morning Hannigan's body was discovered dead on the beach by two men, out for a walk, while the horse was discovered lying dead across the shafts on the over-turned gig, some three chains further on. It is presumed that deceased got into difficulties at high tide, and that both man aud horse were drowned. . Deceased leaves a widow, who resides at' Brougham Street, Nelson. An .inquest will fie held tomorrow.

YACHTSMAN DROWNED.

Punedln, March 14. A young man named Webber was drowned in the bay off Havensboriie yesterday afternoon. He fell off a yacht and- must ■ have struck his head in falling, as, although he was. a good swimmer, he never came to the surface.

MAN HANGS HIMSELF.

Hawera, March 13. John James Kavanagh, aged 40yeai-6, a married man, committed suicide at Manaia this morning by hanging. SUDDEN DEATH WHILE ON HOLIDAY. Foxton. March 13. Mrs. White, aged 60 years of Invercargill, died suddenly on Friday morning at the residence of Mr. Wm. Ross, old friends, with whom she had been spending a holiday. At tiie inquest a verdict was returned of death due to acuto oedema of the lungs, to anyone.. ' :

SUICIDE OF A PRISONER.

In a. message left on a slate in the cell the prisoner wrote ' thanking the gaoler and doctor for their J kindness, adding: "I am trying to go 3 right, but my head is too weak." The Coroner t returned a, verdict' of suicide and r'e- . marked that no blame was attachable to anyone.
