THE ZOO

A. BEAUTIFYING PROPOSAL. ■ The Wellington. Rose and Carnation Club is a body of enthusiastic horticulturists, who generally go in lor the cultivation. of prize roses and carnations for the pleasure it gives them and their friends privately, and to enjoy the competition afforded by occasional shows. The club now seeks to lend its valuable aid to the City as a beautifying society, and on Thursday afternoon its deputies, Messrs. J. B. Harcoui-r, H. l f ox, G. Jeffreys, and Geo. Remington, waited on the Reserves Committee of the City Council with a concrete scheme for beautifying the Zoo' at Newtown Park. The proposal of the deputation was to the effect that if the City Council would prepare an allotment of ground at the head of the lake they would be pre# pared to plant 500 prize roses, and tend their growth, and 60 establish that horticultural luxury—a rosary. They would also like to establish a rhododendron walk at the rear of the bird houses* Another suggestion was that if the committee could se6 its way to remove the main entrance to the Zoo'a chain to the westward trees could be planted across the present entrances, as a breakwihd,' and a big pergola of climbing roses would be erected by the club. The northern end of the lake (the end nearest the entrance) it was thought couldbe made to look picturesque .if native ' trees and shrubs were judiciously plant-;' ed. In short, the scheme was to make what was at preseut a very interesting ' resort a very beautiful one. When asked what the preparatory work was likely to txist the council, members of the deputation expressed the opinion that' it would,be covered:hy an outlay of £100. Councillor Frost (chairman of the committee) expressed his pleasure at the generous proposal,of the club, and. said it wa6 gratifying to see citisens taking an interest ,in the beautifying of the City. The project, however, was a matter of finance, that would havo to he considered. The whole proposal would be gone into.as soon as possible and a decision arrived at.
